I think this bug has really been hijacked, and is really too confusing to be of use any further at this point. If the people affected by the original bug are still being affected by it with 1.8.0 (entering PPAs soon, and maverick-updates), then please file a new bug, and provide backtraces from "banshee --debug" and "killall -SIGQUIT banshee-1" during the hang.
