Part of the problem seems to be that the netbook normally runs Lucid with encrypted home directory and 5GB of encrypted swapspace. Thus the LiveCD boot of Maverick beta doesn't see the swap partition, because even though it has the linux-swap partition type, it doesn't have the swapspace signature in the first block (it's encrypted with a key pulled from /dev/random due to the setting in /etc/crypttab. Therefore Maverick runs totally from RAM, which seems to tickle some kernel problems even in a 1GB machine.
