Okay, so I used the first method of renaming the gnome-settings- daemon.desktop and got to the login screen.
Then I used the recovery console and typed in the command: gconftool-2 --type=bool --set /apps/gnome_settings_daemon/xrandr/turn_on_external_monitors_at_startup false Then I exited the recovery console and continues to login to Gnome as usual. It all worked as you described...
