They both work fine on my system.  One to a local drive that is
formatted as NTFS, the other to a windows server.

Anything else you would like me to try to resolve this?

This looks like a problem inside of GVFS, perhaps related to Samba.  If
you do a File -> Open with gedit (or eog) from a file on the Windows
share, do you see any problems?
