Your problem is not related to h264 encoding. You have to know that the "h264" rendering profile of kdenlive uses :
-h264 for video -aac for audio -mp4 for container Kdenlive renders using ffmpeg ; and even with the unstripped libraries something is missing : AAC encoder. Since Ubuntu Hardy the libfaac support for ffmpeg has been disabled due to licence incompatibility with LGPL. So the profile is disabled because an aac encoder is missing. You have to known that ffmpeg developers are working on a free internal aac encoder and kdenlive knows haw to use it , BUT is has landed in ffmpeg 0.6 only available in Ubuntu Maverick (I have tested). You can wait or use a special ffmpeg version for your ubuntu version with libfaac activated. For jaunty and Karmic look at ppa:sunab /kdenlive-stable, for lucid add in complement the Medibuntu repository. ** Changed in: kdenlive (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid ** Description changed: Binary package hint: kdenlive I have libx264 and all -extra ffmpeg packages installed. Kdenlive config wizard tells me that libx264 is in list of supported video codecs, and h264 is in list of supported formats. But in rendering dialog all h.264 profiles are marked red.
