Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.32-24-generic

The Lucid Lynx 10.04.* generic amd64 kernel (2.6.32-24-generic) fails to
boot on a dual quad-core E5410 Xeon Dell Precision T7400 workstation
(see screenshot #1 for CPU details) while booting processor 3 (of 8;
screenshot #2). An existing RHEL 5 installation using kernel
2.6.18-128.1.10.el5 works w/o boot issues (boots and uses all 8
processors; boot log attached). Lucid can be made to boot using the
nolapic boot parameter, and in this case, the boot log (attached) shows
that all 8 processors are recognised but only 1 is used. other boot
parameters (e.g., acpi=off or noapic) have no effect.

Booting of the same live CD is successful on an older dual Xeon Dell
Precision 670 workstation where Lucid is now installed on disk and works
flawlessly (boot log attached).

A Fedora 13 (also amd64) live CD shows the same behaviour on the T7400
(boot fails trying to boot processor 3). In this case, adding nolapic to
the boot parameters causes a kernel crash at a later stage during boot.

Lucid Lynx 10.04.* is not the only Ubuntu version that fails to boot on
the T7400. Karmic has the same issue.
