my random system freezes (independent from browser use) got fixed when I upgraded my wireless drivers to the linux-backports-modules-compat-wireless-2.6.35-lucid-generic package. I also have Atheros hardware (ath5k), and not a single freeze since the upgrade. Kernel is 2.6.32-25-generic.
