Hi, I'm very new to Ubuntu, but have a little bit of familiarity with
linux.

I'm experiencing the same issue, and I thought my info could be helpful:

Motherboard: Gigabyte K8NS Pro (nForce3)
Processor: AMD64 3000+
GPU: Saphire X800 Pro
Ubuntu Version: 7.04

Here's my experience:
> Couldn't load live CD at all... vesa drivers wouldn't work, tried multiple
> fixes, all with the same result: hard crash on bootup either at the splash
> screen, or when the gui was supposed to load.
> DLed the alternative CD and installed Ubuntu through OEM interface
> Same issues as with the Live CD, but was able to tweek settings by loading
> ubuntu in recovery mode.
> Tried setting driver to both vesa and vga, no luck
> ran "apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx", and set the driver in xorg.conf file
> to "fglrx". I was then able to type in recovery mode: "/etc/init.d/gdm
> start", and I could get the GUI up.
> I can now get an icon and a tan screen, but it hard locks at that point

This is my first submision, so please forgive any noobish mistakes.
Also, if anyone can tell me where to find appropriate log files to
submit, if they exist, I'd be happy to help any way I can. :)
