Again - this sounds like a bug in the SANE backend (probably hplip)
for the scanner. If you start gscan2pdf with --debug, the scanimage
call will be displayed in the terminal window, along with a load of
other debug information. If you confirm that the call for a greyscale
scan produces a blank image in Maverick, but not in Lucid, then file a
bug against HPLIP.
