I am not sure if the search or the categories should be at the top level. But a problem is that you don't get a visual clue, that the search is still active. I plan to use python-sexy's search widget in the future, since it changes its background color if the search is active.
If we change the behavior of the search widget we also would have to move it to the right of the categories. Just changing the behavior is not enough and would confuse other users, since the search widget is above the categorie widget. the same applies to the show combobox.
