Michael Vogt, this looks a little like a shortcoming (bug?) in apt for me. In this case foomatic-db-compressed-ppds should get priority against foomatic-db as it solves the dependencies of the new ubuntu-desktop and so no artificial prioritizing (as setting the priority of foomatic-db to extra) would be needed.
