Thanks for the info.

I am using XUBUNTU 10.10 (Maverick). Unfortunately there is no ´rescue´ 
option included in the ´boot menu´ of this Alpha version
therefore I couldn´t  proceed with all the steps you proposed. The 
memory check was ok.

Do you have any other suggestions?
