** Description changed: Binary package hint: pulseaudio Release ---------- Description: Ubuntu maverick (development branch) Release: 10.10 Package Version --------------------- pulseaudio: Installed: 1:0.9.22~0.9.21+stable-queue-32-g8478-0ubuntu17 Candidate: 1:0.9.22~0.9.21+stable-queue-32-g8478-0ubuntu17 Version table: *** 1:0.9.22~0.9.21+stable-queue-32-g8478-0ubuntu17 0 500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status Hardware ------------ Generic C-Media 8738 7.1 (only use 4 channels) 4.0 Speaker system Configuration ----------------- "Sound Preferences -> Hardware" is set to use "Analog Surround 4.0 Output" for the CM8738 device "Sound Preferences -> Output" is set the the correct device, which the balance and fader in the center /etc/pulse/daemon.conf has "default-sample-channels = 4" Expected Result --------------------- The master volume should control both the front and the rear speakers Actual Result ----------------- The master volume control only controls the front speakers. The real speakers are set to FULL volume. Other ------- A bit of searching turned up the following text at http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php/Cmipci#4.2F6_Multi-Channel_Playback "WARNING When "Four Channel Mode" switch is off, the output from rear speakers will be FULL VOLUME regardless of Master and PCM volumes. This might damage your audio equipment. Please disconnect speakers before your turn off this switch. " If I didn't have a separate master volume switch on the speakers themselves, this would have happened to me. Being as Sound Preferences itself doesn't seem to have the "4 channel mode" switch, I installed gnome-alsamixer. This does show the "Four Channel Mode" setting. However, when pulsedaemon is running, it is not possible to select the switch. If I kill pulsedaemon, the switch can be enabled and the speakers act as expected (I used speakertest to prove this). - This problem has existed ever since the introduction of Pulse as the - default. + This problem has existed ever since the introduction of Pulse as the default. + --- + AlsaVersion: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.23. + Architecture: amd64 + AudioDevicesInUse: + USER PID ACCESS COMMAND + /dev/snd/controlC0: tanktarta 1802 F.... pulseaudio + /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p: tanktarta 1802 F...m pulseaudio + Card0.Amixer.info: + Card hw:0 'CMI8738'/'C-Media CMI8738 (model 55) at 0xbc00, irq 16' + Mixer name : 'CMedia PCI' + Components : '' + Controls : 41 + Simple ctrls : 22 + DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.10 + InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat" - Alpha amd64 (20100906) + NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia + Package: pulseaudio 1:0.9.22~0.9.21+stable-queue-32-g8478-0ubuntu17 + PackageArchitecture: amd64 + ProcEnviron: + PATH=(custom, user) + LANG=en_GB.UTF-8 + SHELL=/bin/bash + ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.35-20.29-generic 2.6.35.4 + Tags: maverick + Uname: Linux 2.6.35-20-generic x86_64 + UserGroups: adm admin cdrom dialout lpadmin plugdev sambashare + dmi.bios.date: 12/13/2007 + dmi.bios.vendor: Phoenix Technologies, LTD + dmi.bios.version: 6.00 PG + dmi.board.name: GeForce6100PM-M2 + dmi.board.vendor: ECS + dmi.board.version: 2.0 + dmi.chassis.asset.tag: Unknow + dmi.chassis.type: 3 + dmi.chassis.vendor: ECS + dmi.chassis.version: Unknow + dmi.modalias: dmi:bvnPhoenixTechnologies,LTD:bvr6.00PG:bd12/13/2007:svnECS:pnGeForce6100PM-M2:pvr2.0:rvnECS:rnGeForce6100PM-M2:rvr2.0:cvnECS:ct3:cvrUnknow: + dmi.product.name: GeForce6100PM-M2 + dmi.product.version: 2.0 + dmi.sys.vendor: ECS + mtime.conffile..etc.pulse.daemon.conf: 2010-09-07T13:14:22 ** Attachment added: "AlsaDevices.txt" https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/bugs/632389/+attachment/1556557/+files/AlsaDevices.txt -- Rear speakers always at full volume using Pulseaudio with C-Media 8738 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/632389 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
