@John: Thanks very much for helping this along. I watched very closely when I booted this morning, and I'm certain that I'm seeing a flash of a text screen just after the Ubuntu splash, but before the GDM login screen, and I'm certain that it is showing this message near the top: "GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0)"
I can also confirm that this is the message, as always, at the top of the tty7 screen (I can press Ctrl-Alt-F7 before even logging in to confirm this). As always, I'm usually on tty2 (or tty1) after a boot, and tty8 after logging out and logging in again. Here are my hardware specs: System76 Serval Pro (SER-P6) laptop Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) 64 Bit Linux Core i7-840QM Processor ( 45nm, 8MB L3 Cache, 1.86GHz ) 8 GB - DDR3 1333 MHz Nvidia GeForce GTX 285M Graphics with 1GB GDDR3 Video Memory 160 GB Intel X25-M Solid State Drive I can provide the logs you requested soon, but have a couple questions. To add the boot option plymouth:debug in grub, would I just append to the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT parameter in my /etc/grub/default file and run update-grub? So, it would look like this: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash plymouth:debug" I'm also uncertain as to where the plymouth debugging log will be located.
