Using Ubuntu 6.06, Amarok 1.3.8, xine engine on a Dell Inspiron 6000 I am having the same problem.
This is solved for me in Amarok by going to Settings, Configure Amarok, Engine, xine engine, and changing the Output plugin from alsa to oss.
