ERROR: pid directory /var/run/samba does not exist

I've tested this on Dell 170L and Dell 210L desktops, and Dell Inspiron
1300 laptops: all identical errors.

I've test this in Ubuntu 5.10 and it works fine:

Processing section "[homes]"
Processing section "[printers]"
Processing section "[print$]"
Loaded services file OK.
