I had this problem, and, after a few suggestions from elsewhere, I turned off display of images (it was previously set to show images from people in my contacts). Perhaps it's an addressbook issue? I never had it before 10.04; I wonder if my issue had something to do with the sluggishness of CouchDB address books.
