Sorry, I can not tell. After trying other linux distros, that were even worse on my system, I reinstalled Windows XP on that old Toshiba machine. Basing on the information on other fora that treated the freezing issue, I concluded that xserver could not cooperate with my (obsolete) intel graphic chipset. The work arounds on these fora (switch back to earlier versions) seem to indicate that lucid does not resolve the freezing ( https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes ).
