Not sure if it helps to debug this bug but I had same issue with Debian Squeeze where two buttons reseted xset settings: Fn+Down and Fn+Up (lcd brightness). I solved it by disabling HAL in debian, however as far as I know Ubuntu 10.04 should not use HAL any more.
However one side-note, after HAL disable, xev start showing different keycode in some reason.
