System: Dell Latitude D400, 1GB RAM. After upgrading from 8.04LTS to 10.04LTS I ran into the same problem, but the problem affected a group of Applets, like the Desktop-Applet, the Date-Applet (which also crashes), etc... I tried reinstalling the gnome-applets and gnome-applets-data. It made little difference. Please note that at times only one or two applets have the problem. Other times more applets are affected.
