I think you just made my day when I saw this many "X crashes when
opening a 2.8 GB text file" reports.

I can't say I'm too surprised most editors do this.Many languages have
hard-coded variable size limits, and one ones that don't have virtual
limits, which can be anything from the smallest RAM chip to the total
RAM & swap space.
