Public bug reported:
The Add Printer dialog boxes apparently can only cope with a printer
connected to another computer. I've tried as many variations of "host"
as I can think of, including the most obvious, the printer's LAN address
(192.168.2.101). No joy.
A dialog box pops up demanding that I give a password for a user group
(WORKGROUP, apparently set up by a Win7 computer on the same LAN).
The Authentication popup and its two parents go zombie immediately --
can't be killed from the GUI.
The printer is an HP Photosmart C7180. I used it for some time with a
direct USB connection, but now want to share it on my wired LAN with two
other computers, the first attempt being an HP Pavilion with Windows 7.
It was a hassle getting W7 to connect, even with HP chat assistance, but
it eventually worked. No joy with Ubuntu 10.04, though. Next try: a
Macbook (PowerPC processor), with a wireless connection -- wireless
internet connection works OK for the Mac.
OS is Ubuntu 10.04, 64-bit for AMD processor, all updates installed and current
Computer is Dell Inspiron 1501 with AMD Turion 64 processor
I have logs and the printer diagnostic, but I don't see a way to attach
copies.
