Just a note - I don't know if this is useful or not. I used the package
below to get the nvidia driver, and it works to an extent (on the same
Dell D800 reported above). I don't know if it was something that the bug
fix requires as a workaround, or if I'm still supposed to use nvidia-
glx.

apt-get install nvidia-glx-legacy

This allowed me to set 1920x1200 resolution (which the nv driver did not allow 
- maybe that is fixable with xorg.conf, I don't know).
The restricted driver manager now reports in a dialog: "Your hardware does not 
need any restricted drivers" and the Desktop Effects dialog does not allow me 
to enable desktop effects.
