You're a genius, Alexander!!! That did it...one little '/' too many!

I ran sudo apt-get update, got a screenful of beautiful text, then, for
good measure, I went out and ran Update Manager and let it load a bunch
of stuff...everything worked as normal...

I need to ask, where in the world are you? I am in Bloomington, Indiana,
USA and it is just after 9:30PM. I sure hope I haven't been keeping you
up nights. I really appreciate your effort and I especially appreciate
how you were never condescending,no matter how little obviously know.

Your friend,
Bruce Smith

here it is: E: malformed line 43 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (URI
parse) E: the list of sources could not be read. Go to the repository dialog to
correct the problem. E:_ cache>open()failed, please report
