Alexander--

I just got back and couldn't find you on the Ubuntu pages (I have
difficulty navigating them) so, since our conversation was echoed on my
yahoo account ( bscl...@yahoo.com) I am just replying to your last entry
email(hope that is allowed).

I did as you suggested with sudo apt-get update and got this error:

E: Malformed line 43 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse)

I also note that when I open Ubuntu I have a red circle with a white
minus sign in the top toolbar (not the correct term I know) at top of my
screen. When I point my cursor at that, I get a bubble with this same
error message with the suggestion that there might be a dependency
problem...notice, too, that this is the message that I put into my
original bug report (which I guess wasn't a bug, but the message said to
report it and I didn't know where to do that)

I get similar error messages when I try to open Update Manager and when
I try to open Synaptic...

I'm afraid I messed up my computer somehow when I tried to download and
install Java from the Java site using the directions they give on-line
for doing that. I did download the java .bin file to my desktop, but the
steps they gave did not complete the install.

Thanks,
Bruce

I get this when I try to open Synaptic...it doesn't say where to repoort it so
here it is: E: malformed line 43 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (URI
parse) E: the list of sources could not be read. Go to the repository dialog to
correct the problem. E:_ cache>open()failed, please report
