Here's what I did (worked for me): First, I installed the package "startupmanager" (like so: sudo aptitude install startupmanager). It should appear in the Gnome menu under System > Administration > StartUp-Manager. From there, select a resolution and set colour depth to 24 bits. Enable "Show boot splash" and press Close.
