Progress update. I changed the acpi setting in /etc/default/grub and my Acer Aspire Netbook no longer freezes. However, I am also seeing the side effect of the system not powering off when you select shutdown. I would appreciate a work around for that if anyone has one. At least it is a less severe problem at this point. I applied the same change to my HP Pavillion a404x but it did not fix the problem. It is possible it is a hardware malfunction as the system was not powering down on system shutdown when I had Windows installed and it is an older machine. Any ideas to fix this one would be welcomed.
