Workaround found with help from Chris Halse Rogers:

This was failing back to VESA, because I had disabled KMS.
I had done that in an effort to fix a blank screen on boot.

The original symptom was a blank screen, although the machine would boot
and was accessible via ssh.

First, I enabled KMS again to get back to the original failure (blank screen).
Then I logged in via ssh and created an xorg.conf:

sudo bash
# service gdm stop
# Xorg -configure
# mv corg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Now edit the nre xorg.conf file and change the line that says
Driver "nvidia"
to be
Driver "nv"

reboot
