Tuning the LCD filter weights is possible since FreeType 2.4.0.
- A new function `FT_Library_SetLcdFilterWeights' is available to
adjust the filter weights set by `FT_Library_SetLcdFilter'.

You can install freetype2-demos on maverick to try it out. It is not
obvious to me how to find the optimal set of weights. probably needs
carefully chosen presets.
But all the higher level libraries need to pass through the options too:
fontconfig, Xsettings, Cairo, etc.
