In addition to the comment from Antonio Censi, I had to: sudo apt-get install zlib1g-dev sudo apt-get install autoconf sudo apt-get install python-dev
and edit Makefile lines 23,26 to read:
./configure --disable-perl --with-python=/usr/bin/python
