This happens on Ubuntu 10.4x64 and Firefox 3.6.6. The only way to recover proper responsiveness is to disable Xmarks. Had it in previous FF & Ubuntu versions too. Another symptom is that the display of typed characters pauses for about 6 or 7 seconds while you type, then it catches up. It's VERY annoying.
