Well, the new title does not effectively describe the bug. There is no conflict (as I would not be running XFCE and GNOME at the same time), nor does XFCE have such a daemon that I am aware of. (As I said in my original report). Perhaps having a setting to allow gnome-settings- daemon to not try and take control of, say, the keyboard settings, and let the user set it up himself via an Xmodmap.
