Thanks sas; That solution does not work on my Gateway NV7915u. In fact, it made things worse. Upon loading, I got several error messages from Gnome-Panel - It was unable to load WorkspaceSwitcherApplet, WindowListApplet and ShowDesktopApplet. And as far as the brightness itself goes - while till now the buttons that control it would show the indicator in the top-right corner, now that doesn't happen. The buttons don't seem to do anything.
