I no longer have the problem but. . . It's definitely related to access control lists. There seems to be no way to turn off access control.
setfacl -b fileref # doesn't work as advertised. I believe that to be well known. A solution is to remove whole directories of files and re-create them. Unless you deliberately set an ACL they will stay as created. It is likely that my home directory was once infected with ACL rules during an unsuccessful attempt to use SELinux. As far as gedit is concerned the bug should remain closed.
