All current Macbooks are x86. You can even boot them into Windows if you buy a copy.
As for the mini PCI: Thinkpads do generally have very good hardware maintenance manuals that you can download from the Lenovo support site. You'll be able to check how easy it would be to open up and swap the miniPCI, and you can pick up a new Atheros one for $10-$20. [BTW, my very old Thinkpad X30 was locked to a particular wireless card vendor: it wouldn't boot with a different one installed. The workaround was to bootup without the card, run a utility to flip a bit in the CMOS, and then reinstall the card.
