Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

Not sure how easy to reproduce this but I can provide as much evidence
as required to help resolve.

All https sites stopped working in firefox recently. I get a time out
message from the browser.

"The connection has timed out
The server at launchpad.net is taking too long to respond."

Things tried so far.
1. Tried logging in as another "virgin" user.
2. Tried using other browsers eg lynx and these are also affected.
3. Turned off IPv6.
4. Reinstalled openssl crypt libraries
5. I have another older machine also connected through the same router and this
is not effected.
6. Compared the straces output when running lynx on the two machines not
apparent differences other than the time out.
7. Compared the libraries loaded with both using ldd. Bad machine is using tls
but this is easily turned off and has no effect. (with and without evidence
included below)
8. Copied over /etc and checked with xxdiff no obvious differences in the
files.
9. Ran a virtual machine on the bad machine and https works there fine.

I'm attaching strace, ldd when using lynx as this is simpler please let me know
if any more is required.
NB:
BAD== bad machine - snail
GOOD == good machine - sloth

I cant attach this stuff as launchpad is under too high load right now
and keeps timing out when I hit submit so they can be found at
http://burchill.net/brokenhttps.txt

PS: might be worth mentioning ssh in and out on the "bad" machine works
just fine.
