Peter B P: Did you try the solution given by Enrico Sardi in the first comment to this report (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager-applet/+bug/577678/comments/1). Are you also using an ADSL/DSL connection configured with pppoeconf? This bug is specific to the using the said connections.
