I have a similar problem with my laptop (Edgy Eft) since a couple of days. The screen slowly becomes gray during the boot-up and is eventually almost white. I can't see any special event in the boot procedure that triggers this. It normally happens at the end but also during the fsck of the disk when this was forced. To get the gdm-login screen I do CTRL+ALT+FX.
