Thank you for that hint. Although I do not intend to change to Lucid yet, I like to inform that since approx. 2-3 weeks the reported bug also disappeared on my version.
I always continued doing updates for ubuntu 9.10 and I think it was resolved after I got a bunch of updates inluding kernel 2.6.31.22. I am not quite sure about the circumstances, but I hope this can help you.
