I managed to clean up my text files. I have several hundred, of which about eight had a couple of non standard characters. But it took hours. I had to open each one on Kate, see if Kate opened it read-only (a good indicator of a UTF8 file with non-UTF8 chars, as it happens) fix the problem (often just an apostrophe or a pound sign)) and save the file. TBH, it would be handy if ZIM would at least identify the duff files en masse. On version 0.43, all that happens is the file does not open and then you have to restart ZIM because no other file will open either - except oddly, in a new window! That is really tedious.
But no matter. The search works now and that is a great help. I will look around tomorrow and try to find a PPA updated Zim. I am a big fan and it would be great to play with the latest incarnation. I also have kept back a couple of problematic text files so I can see how it reacts to them. I will report back when I have something sensible to add. Best wishes, and thanks again for your very rapid response.
