Peter, backing down to udisks (1.0.1-1build1) fixes the problem. The recent change to udisks: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/udisks/+bug/539515/comments/123 is the regression. I backed down to udisks (1.0.1-1build1) via synaptic (Package|Force Version) and now the floppy mounts properly using 'Places|Floppy Disk'.
