Addition to my previous comment: when I physically switch the drives, that is, switching the SATA cables, XP boots just fine. Of course, in this case I cannot boot into Ubuntu as the MBR of XP has no knowledge of the other OS on the other disk... Possibly this is the same issue as bug #469568 (high importance + triaged)
