The change in kernel corrected the problem. Here's what I did:
Install,
     
/media/9822-3FAF/linux-image-2.6.35-020635rc3-generic_2.6.35-020635rc3_i386.deb

Here's what uname reports,
barn...@ubuntu-1004:~$ uname -a
Linux Ubuntu-1004 2.6.35-020635rc3-generic #020635rc3 SMP Sat Jun 12 10:19:32 
UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
barn...@ubuntu-1004:~$ 

I can now move the volume control anywhere that I want.  There are no crashes 
of the sound software.
