As a work around for the problem I edited /var/lib/dpkg/status and removed the entire block referencing flashplugin-nonfree. Once I did that I was able to update the system with the update manager and I was able to run synaptic and use the flashplugin-installer to install the flashplugin-nonfree. It seems that now .flv files, i.e. youtube, now play in Firefox
