So, for my current kernel (NOT mainline), the results are:

 * The machine definitely breaks while going to sleep, as normally the power 
led should blink, and instead the screen just gets white and the machine 
doesn't turn off;
 * It is reproducible every time;
 * It used to work relatively well before lucid. With lucid, the same behavior 
that I reported for mainline (going to sleep but problems waking up) happened 
sometimes. Then, after an HP BIOS update (they performed it as part of a repair 
operation), it got totally broken (white screen);
 * No flashing caps lock;
 * No messages, battery is OK;
 * Suspending from text mode produces the same behavior, and there is no text 
output;
 * https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend doesn't apply, as it is not a 
resume problem :(
