Apparently, I was wrong -  it doesn't work flawlessly as I thought with kernel 
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.35-rc3-maverick/. During 
video playback I noticed several hiccups some of which were more or less severe 
and caused the system to finally hang.

This exactly meets my observation that the broadband connection / device is 
available sometimes whereas sometimes it isn't. I'm going to investigate this 
further, tomorrow. Let's see if it also occurs on 2.6.35-rc1...
(@Brian Candler: Would be interesting to know if you can confirm this issue or 
if it's only me.)
