This seems to affect me, too. Got an IBM thinkpad X31. If I remember right it started with ath5k and kernel 2.6.31-20.
Regarding Brian's suspicion: My Laptop gets the model right and crashes nevertheless... lspci: 02:02.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc.
