Hey, This usability bug also bothered me and after some searching and finding only half solutions I found this. I really like your fix!
I had to install the debs separately, after first uninstalling evolution though, because the package management apparently reports it as being older than the current version in the ubuntu repo, which is ubuntu10 already. The already mentioned issue of evolution opening up a second window when it is opened and the "Contacts" entry is selected from the indicator applet also appears with the calendar.
