I'm seeing this issue and noticed that it appears to be "triggerable" by
unplugging and plugging in the charger on my laptop. The interesting
thing is that it triggers only when I plug the charger back in, and
never appears to happen when I unplug it.

Convenient command-line for monitoring usage:
watch -n 0.1 'cat /proc/`ps ax|grep gnome-power-manager|grep -v grep|sed "s/\
*\([^? ]*\).*/\1/"`/smaps | grep "\[heap\]" -A 11'
