Public bug reported: Ubuntu 10.04 suffers from a very slow boot on due to a 10 second or so pause while the kernel sets up the SATA controller. The problem occurs on every boot at this point in the kernel initialization sequence:

I believe ata1 is the eSATA port. I think my hard disks are connected to ata2 and ata3 This problem is also present in the 2.6.35 maverick backport kernel from the kernel-ppa. This problem did not occur with ubuntu 9.10.
